Ancient wisdom for gut regulation, metabolic balance, and hormonal stability

The ancient art of healing, which is known as Ayurveda, utilizes the herb Mustaka (Cyperus rotundus), which is also referred to as Musta, Nagarmotha, and Mustaka, to help promote digestive health and to bring balance to the body and metabolism in general. The primary benefits that have been valued throughout the ancient texts of Ayurveda are that Mustaka purifies and cleanses the gastrointestinal tract, eliminates metabolic toxins known as Ama, and brings balance between the three doshas of the body (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). The cooling nature of Mustaka helps promote proper digestion, and the restoration of proper digestion is essential to long-term health and vitality. Further, Mustaka is known to stabilize digestive functions, aid in the absorption of nutrients, and promote positive gastrointestinal health. Mustaka has been utilized throughout history for all types of gastrointestinal disorders, including diarrhea, unspecified gastrointestinal disorders (such as IBS), and fever after a period of inactivity, among others. Mustaka is also associated with women's reproductive health, treating menstrual issues and imbalances due to menopause, therefore aiding in the restoration of the Agni component of the body's metabolism. Mustaka is well known for promoting clear and precise metabolic health.

What is Mustaka (Cyperus rotundus)?

मुस्तकं दीपनीयं ग्राहि पाचनीयं शीतलम् । अतिसारज्वरघ्नं च पित्तकफनिवारणम् ॥

Musta is described as a cooling Deepana–Pachana herb that kindles digestive fire, absorbs excess moisture, alleviates diarrhea and fever, and pacifies Pitta and Kapha.

A perennial aromatic grass, Cyperus rotundus, is an underground rhizome that has a long history of being used as an important regulator of Agni in Ayurveda. The ancient texts of Ayurveda recognize the importance of Musthakas for their ability to correct Agnimandya, provide the means to digest Ama, and help to maintain various intestinal disorders, especially those caused by the imbalance of the Pitta/Kapha dosha.

The main part of the plant that has pharmaceutical activity is the rhizome, which contains many different types of bioactive components, including sesquiterpenes (cyperene and cyperol), essential oils, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds. These compounds work together to produce the Deepana, Pachana, and Sangrahi, as well as antispasmodic, analgesic, and antimicrobial effects.

Top Benefits of Mustaka

Supports Menstrual Regulation & Dysmenorrhea

Mustaka is referred to in Ayurveda as helpful for treating female reproductive disorders or Artava-vikaras - female reproductive disorders that result because of the fire (Agni) inside a woman’s body being disturbed by the imbalance between the two main doshas (Pitta and Kapha). Mustaka stimulates digestion, improves digestion, and Shothahara will reduce feelings of heaviness, cramping and excessive bleeding associated with abnormal menstrual cycles.

Experimental studies prove that Mustaka also has an antispasmodic and an anti-inflammatory effect, as seen in its traditional use for reducing pain and discomfort during periods or uterine cramps.

Supports Digestion & Gut Function

Along with relieving indigestion, gas, colicky symptoms, and diarrhoea, it is one of the best herbs in Ayurveda for restoring digestive balance once Ama, or toxins, has built up in the body. Mustaka can also stimulate Agni and effectively absorb excess moisture in the digestive tract, thus helping relieve gas and colicky symptoms in addition to increasing gut motility.

Antimicrobial & Gut Microbiome Support

Not only has Mustaka been traditionally used for treating gut-related infections and improving wound healing, but laboratory-based studies have shown that Mustaka possesses antibacterial and antifungal activity against bacteria, including Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. For optimum use of Mustaka as a means for maintaining healthy gut flora and protection against opportunistic infections, Mustaka should be used under proper clinical supervision.

Relieves Diarrhea, IBS & Inflammatory Bowel Conditions

Ayurveda classically utilizes Musta to treat Atisara as well as Grahani (IBS or chronic diarrheal syndrome). Cyperus rotundus extract has been shown through research to help regulate the inflammatory process and provide some level of relief to those who suffer from colitis by reducing damage to the intestinal mucosa associated with the disease and alleviating the inflammation associated with it, which is consistent with Musta's role in Ayurveda for addressing chronic bowel disorders.

Helpful in PCOS-Associated Digestive & Metabolic Imbalance

PCOS in Ayurveda is considered an Agnimandya, Ama and Kapha-based disorder. To treat these three components, Mustaka helps address the root causes by improving digestion, reducing metabolic toxins, and promoting the synchronicity of metabolic and intestinal function. Scientific evidence also supports that Cyperus rotundus has both metabolic-regulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, which may support weight management, insulin sensitivity and balance of hormones when combined with other complementary protocols.

Scientific Studies on Mustaka

Endometrial Receptivity & Embryo Implantation

Cyperus rotundus was shown to increase levels of implant marker proteins LIF and integrin in a mouse experiment of failed implantation (based on implantation/embryo implant/womb). More research is needed before it is known if Cyperus rotundus can support human reproduction.

Anti-Obesity & Metabolic Regulation

Musta is used in traditional medicine as a metabolic regulator; a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial showed that musta extract reduced weight, BMI, waist circumference and hip circumference as well as improved the lipid profiles of obese subjects after taking Musta extract with either piperine or a placebo over 90 days.

Antispasmodic & Gastrointestinal Effects

Research shows that Cyperus rotundus may have effects on intestinal tissue, relaxing it and facilitating bowel movements through antispasmodic properties (both in vitro and animal studies). The finding is a confirmation of the traditional use of Cyperus rotundus for Atisara (diarrhea) and digestive issues.

Neurogenesis & Cognitive Support

In an animal model of Alzheimer's disease, the extract from Cyperus rotundus improved spatial memory and encouraged the development of new neurons in the hippocampus. The results are preliminary, but suggest that the flavonoids may protect against cellular degeneration, consistent with ancient traditions to use Cyperus rotundus to support memory and "Medhya"

Antimicrobial Action Relevant to Urinary Tract Conditions

An investigation was conducted testing extracts of Cyperus rotundus versus multidrug-resistant strains of E. coli obtained from women diagnosed with urinary tract infections (UTIs). The results revealed ample evidence of considerable inhibitory activity demonstrated by the extracts, thus suggesting potential therapeutic value for treating bacterial infections in females. However, future clinical research will be necessary to confirm these findings in a human population.

How Mustaka Works: Interlocking the Mechanism

Ayurvedic Mechanism

  • Digestion (Agni) is supported by two primary physiological processes, which occur in a bidirectional manner (via vasoconstriction and vasodilation) through the influence of Dipana and Pachana on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract as well as the liver.

  • Further, Dipana restores normal digestion/metabolism to correct any impairment of digestion/metabolism, while also eliminating both Ama (the metabolic byproduct of improperly digested food) and Kleda (excessive moisture collected within the body)

  • By reducing the effects of aggravated Pitta and Kapha (heat and cold, respectively) on the body, this also plays an important role in the treatment of digestive-related conditions

  • Supplementing the diet with foods that exhibit Grahi (absorption) and Sangrahi (elimination) properties additionally assists in maintaining healthy absorption of intestinal nutrients as well as regulating bowel habits. The anti-inflammatory effect of Shothahara also enables the treatment of Jirṇa Jvara (fever from digestive distress), as well as abdominal discomfort related to the menstrual cycle due to Artava-pravritti.

Modern Biomedical Mechanism

  • Normal physiological balance takes place by stabilizing the processes of digestion, assimilation, and elimination.

  • The relaxing effect that this herb has on the smooth muscle of the GI tract (antispasmodic) aids in alleviating intestinal spasms/cramps associated with both gastrointestinal hypermotility and diarrhea.

  • Musta has equal importance in reversing the effects of chronic inflammation associated with metabolic disorders due to its effect on modulating inflammatory mediators and oxidative stress by acting as an antioxidant, and its ability to

  • Kill pathogenic bacteria found in the intestinal tract.

  • support microbial balance in the intestinal tract.

  • improve lipid and glucose metabolism via alterations in metabolic signalling pathways.

  • Protect the mucosal lining of the gastrointestinal tract from injury/inflammation due to excessive inflammation/cellular damage that occurs during chronic low-grade inflammation, resulting in damage/tissue alterations occurring in the GI tract that eventually affect the entire body's systemic balance.

Who Should Take Mustaka?

  • Those who have poor digestion, no appetite, bloating and gas, or a feeling of heaviness due to an imbalance or accumulation of Agni (the digestive fire) and Ama (toxic waste).

  • Those who have recurrent diarrhea or loose stools, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or malabsorption issues (Grahani).

  • Individuals who have sluggish metabolism, Kapha-related weight gain, or metabolic imbalance due to poor digestion.

  • Individuals who have irregular menstrual cycles, abdominal heaviness or bloating, or who have related digestive disturbances with their cycle.

  • Women who experience dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), especially with gut symptoms or inflammation during their menstrual cycle.

  • Women who have PCOS-related digestive and metabolic imbalances, with accumulation of Kapha and poor digestion as contributing factors.

  • Individuals who have chronic or recurrent fever due to digestive or metabolic causes (Jirna Jvara).

  • Individuals who have a Pitta-Kapha imbalance, presenting as heat and inflammation, heaviness, sticky stools or sluggish digestion.

  • People recovering from an illness, fever, childbirth or prolonged use of medication and have compromised digestion and absorption.

  • Individuals who have gut disturbances due to stress, such as abdominal cramping, inconsistent bowel movements, and loss of appetite.

  • Those who are prone to developing intestinal infections and dysbiosis, and have recurrent gastrointestinal inflammation.

  • Adults want to restore their digestive capabilities as an initial step to achieving hormonal balance, metabolic health, and overall well-being long-term.

Dosage Recommendations & Safety Guidelines for Mustaka

General Safety of Mustaka

Mustaka is widely regarded as having a high level of safety and acceptability when used within the recommended dosage range. To a lesser extent, occasional mild digestive disorders may occur from the use of Mustaka as well; the most common of these include minor constipation, dry stools, and/or temporary abdominal discomfort. These problems are more likely to arise in a person with a predominantly Vata dosha predominance, due to the classification of mustaka as a Laghu and Ruksha Guna. For optimal results and to avoid/minimize these potential side effects, it is best to take mustaka with some warm water or herbal decoction immediately after meals.

Mustaka Interactions with Medications

Many individuals currently taking an antidiarrheal medication, an antispasmodic medication, or an anti-inflammatory medication should consult with a physician before using Mustaka, as they may experience combined or overlapping effects on the motility or inflammatory status of their intestines. When these medications are taken simultaneously with Mustaka, it is also important to monitor closely.

Use of Mustaka While Pregnant and/or Lactating

For pregnant women, Mustaka should only be administered with the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, as high doses of Mustaka may affect uterine tone and/or the digestion of foods as well. For women who are breastfeeding, taking Mustaka should only be done in controlled amounts while under a healthcare provider's guidance.

Prolonged Administration of Mustaka

Individuals who require Mustaka for long-term metabolic or digestive support should follow the dosage patterns established and approved by their physician. Taking Mustaka in large quantities and for an extended period of time without professional guidance is not advised, especially in individuals with a Vata imbalance, chronic diarrhea, and/or marked Pitta-Kapha imbalance conditions.
